The story of our matriarch, Mary Elizabeth Lynch Beaver as a little girl in the wild Indian Country of north-central Texas circa 1860.

During the 1860 Census, I believe I've found Jesse Daniel at the age of 10 living around Kilgore in Rusk County, Texas in Beat No. 9 and Mary Elizabeth Lynch, who was 6, living in Wise, just E-SE of Dallas . . . These two kids, as we all know, would become Big Daddy's parents (Allie Jackson Beavers - b: 22 June 1889, d: 20 October 1966, AKA Big Daddy in our Beavers' family circles).

Years after the 1860 Census, when Jesse Daniel met and married Mary Elizabeth in Wise, Texas, she was supposedly "staying with a family by the name of "Tanner" as she was orphaned" . . . Orphaned? This I had to check out.

If we put the dates from the Bible all together, the rest of the story comes together. First, a little background on Mary Elizabeth's Mom and Dad. According to the census, Dad was born in Tennessee in 1813 and Mom was born in Ohio in 1815. Their first born was Nancy in 1833, probably in Missouri as all of her children were up until 1853 when Elizabeth was born in Texas.

When Nancy was born, Mom would have been almost 18 and Dad would have been 19. The next baby she had was when she was 19, then twins when she was 21, and the others when she was 26, 27, 29, 33, 35 and finally, Mary Elizabeth when she was 37. When Mom was 36, her second child, Margery Ann died at 18 within a year after she was married and her sixth child, Mary Jane passed away at 7 months old. Within the next 15 months after Margery Ann died, the family would move to Texas where Mary Elizabeth would be born leaving Nancy, Margery Ann and Mary Jane behind.

These dates can be found handwritten in our family Bible's pages. You must admit, Mom was quite a woman in any day or age. 10 kids, still making babies at 37 and all that in the pioneer days before electricity, running water and flushing toilets!

On further inspection, again, way before Jesse Daniel met her, little Mary Elizabeth Lynch, the youngest of a family of 10 children, lost her Mom the day before she turned 7 in 1860 right after the census was taken. Mom was only 44 when she passed.

Then she lost 3 of her 4 brothers to the Civil War two years after that. We don't know they died in the war for sure, but more than likely this was the case as all three of them were of enlistment age and died in 1862 - two of them died just two days apart from each other. James was older than Solomon, but there was no death date documented, so he may have stayed behind to help Dad with the farm and the girls, or possibly went off to war and made it back.

Researching the web, I found that The Battle of Seven Pines, part of The Penninsula Campaign, was centered around the Chickahominy River in southeast Virginia, where several battles of the Civil War were fought in 1862 and 1864 - specifically, the end of May into the beginning of June 1862, during the same timeframe that William and Solomon died.

Casualties at The Battle of Seven Pines were heavy on both sides and each claimed victory. 26,000 troops were amassed on each side of the field before the battle started and after it was over, 980 of our fine, young Confederate Soldiers had fallen and 790 Federal scum were left for dead.

Additionally, The Blockade of the Potomac matches George's death in January 1862. Whether this is how or where the three died or not, the exact dates of their deaths and the dates of the battles match. Only further research on battlefield casualty listings will reveal the truth.

Anyway, back in Texas, Mary Elizabeth's oldest sister, Nancy, must have already married, possibly back in Missouri, seeing how she was almost 30 in 1862, not on the family list in the 1860 Census and no death date for her mentioned in the Bible's pages, either. That left Mary Elizabeth with her father who was almost 50 now, no mother, and her only remaining siblings being a brother 12 years her senior (if he was still around and didn't go off to war) and two sisters that were still only children themselves at just 3 and 4 years older than she was.

Then she lost her father in 1863 . . . she was almost 10 and James would've been 21 and it would seem the kids might have been alone until the Tanners or someone else had taken them in. The census shows another Solomon Lynch who was 31 with a household of his own. This may have been Dad's younger brother or maybe even a nephew, so at least there could've been family they could've gone to.

How long they were alone, if they were left alone, is gone with their memories.

After she married, Mary Elizabeth followed in her mother's footsteps, having nine kids of her own with Jesse Daniel in Oklahoma Indian Territory.

Then there's the story, among others, she told her son (Big Daddy), years later after 1889, about one of her brothers (James maybe?), that was captured, stripped, stabbed and burned by Apaches, but in spite of all that, he still made his way home . . . a 21 year old and his three little sisters aged 10, 13 and 14 out in Indian Country . . . makes you wonder how people even survived back then . . . but thankfully they did or we wouldn't be around to try and piece it all together, would we? . . .

Our matriarch, Mary Elizabeth Lynch Beavers departed this life on March the 2nd, 1927 at the age of 73 in Marlow, Oklahoma and her husband, Jesse Daniel followed her at 77 during a visit to Hot Springs,Arkansas on December 10th of the same year. Pop (Kenneth Marlin Beavers, Sr.), was born the day after Christmas a little over 2 weeks after Jesse passed away.

Both Mary Elizabeth and Jesse Daniel are buried in Marlow Cemetary along with two of their own children, Minnie May who passed away when she was 12 and J C (James Clinton), who passed when he was 23.
